Lunenburg in Nova Scotia, Canada, is a town established in 1753 by the British. Today it stands as one of the best surviving example of a British colonial settlement in North America. The town retains the original layout that goes back to its founding in the 18th century. The overall appearance of the town, as well as the grid pattern of the streets, were drawn by the British in their home country. The wooden architecture of Lunenburg, many of which dates back to its early years in the 18th century, has been well preserved by its inhabitants.
Most of the people of Lunenburg trace their ancestry to Germans from the southern Rhineland as well as the Swiss and the French. They are mostly Protestants who arrived in the New World around the same time as the Pennsylvania Dutch. Their immigration was encouraged by the British.
Today Lunenburg derives its income mainly from tourism. It is the home port of the world famous schooner Bluenose.
