The Historic Centre of Naples is recognised by as a World Heritage Site. It traces its historic back to the Greek settlement of Neapolis in 470 BC. The city has absorbed successive cultures that ruled over it, each leaving its mark in the city. These can be seen today from the numerous historical monuments found throughout the historic centre, among them the Church of Santa Chiara and the Castel Nuovo.

 With an area of 1,700 hectares, the Historic Centre of Naples is the largest in Europe. It was the capital city of the Kingdom of Naples between AD 1282 to 1816, when it merged with Sicily to become the capital of the Two Sicilies until it was merged into Italy in 1861.

Historic Centre of Naples was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 19th session of the World Heritage Committee held in Berlin, Germany, on 4 - 9 December, 1995.
